Ghanaian referee Daniel Nii Ayi Laryea has been given a rousing welcome in Ghana following his return from officiating at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

A video circulating widely on social media shows the veteran referee surrounded by cheering supporters at the Kotoka International Airport in Accra. The reception was marked by drumming, singing and loud applause as fans celebrated his contribution to African football.

Laryea, one of the continent’s most experienced match officials, was among the referees appointed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for the 35th edition of the AFCON. He attracted widespread attention for handling the tense semi-final encounter between Nigeria and host nation Morocco, a match that sparked debate among fans.

Amid criticism on social media, particularly from some Nigerian supporters who accused him of bias, Laryea has stood by his decisions. Speaking to journalists in Accra, he insisted that he officiated the match fairly and in full compliance with the laws of the game.

“For me, I just do my refereeing job and I don’t listen to what goes on social media. I just apply the laws of the game,” he said.

He also dismissed suggestions that social media banter between Nigerians and Ghanaians affected his performance, insisting his focus was purely professional.

Reacting to the overwhelming welcome he received on his return home on Saturday, January 17, 2026, Laryea expressed appreciation in a brief post on X :

“Much appreciated… much love.”

Daniel Laryea’s return has since sparked pride among Ghanaians, many of whom have hailed him as a symbol of excellence and integrity in African football officiating.
