Onakoya Joins Elite WR Chess Team, Set for Global Showdown in Hong Kong

Nigerian chess master and social impact advocate, Tunde Onakoya, has announced plans to compete at the World Team Rapid and Blitz Championship scheduled for June in Hong Kong.

Onakoya disclosed that he will represent the WR Chess team at the prestigious tournament, marking a major step in his international chess career.

The founder of Chess in Slums Africa said he is honoured to be selected, revealing that he will compete alongside some of the biggest names in global chess.

“Proud to announce that I’ll be representing the WR Chess team at the World Team Rapid and Blitz Championship in Hong Kong in June,” he wrote on his social media page.

“I’ll be playing alongside my personal legends and some of the top players in the world,” he added.

Among his teammates are former world champion Viswanathan Anand, as well as leading players Wadim Rosenstein and Alexandra Botez.

Onakoya has gained international recognition not only for his performances on the chessboard but also for his humanitarian work through Chess in Slums Africa, which uses the game to empower children in underserved communities.

He recently drew global attention after setting a new record for the longest chess marathon, further cementing his growing influence in the sport.
