President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday reflected on his time in exile in the United Kingdom during Nigeria’s years of military rule, as he delivered a historic address at Windsor Castle during his state visit.

Speaking at a state banquet hosted by King Charles III, the Nigerian leader expressed gratitude to Britain for the refuge and support extended to pro-democracy activists during a turbulent period in Nigeria’s history.

“Like many Nigerians involved in the pro-democracy struggle, I found safety here,” Tinubu said, recalling his time in exile. He noted that his residence was placed under police protection following threats from agents of the military regime, adding that “it is deeply humbling for me to stand before Your Majesty today as the President of a democratic Nigeria.”

The address also marked a historic milestone, as Tinubu became the first Nigerian leader to speak at Windsor Castle, a site he described as a symbol of continuity in governance and institutional evolution spanning nearly a millennium.

Against that backdrop, the President reaffirmed the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, describing it as one built on shared history, mutual respect, and a common vision for the future. “Nigeria and the United Kingdom have shared more than just history; our two nations share a vision of progress and resilience,” he said.

Highlighting the human connection between both nations, Tinubu pointed to the contributions of Nigerians living in the UK, particularly in critical sectors such as healthcare. He noted that Nigerian professionals play a significant role in the National Health Service, underscoring the importance of the diaspora as a bridge between both countries.

He also referenced the influence of British political thought and institutions on Nigeria’s development, citing legal and constitutional frameworks rooted in English common law, as well as parliamentary traditions that have shaped governance in Nigeria.

On regional and global security, the President drew attention to the growing threat of terrorism in West Africa, particularly in the Sahel region. He emphasised Nigeria’s responsibility in maintaining regional stability and signalled the importance of continued cooperation with the United Kingdom in addressing these challenges, ahead of talks with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

While acknowledging ongoing challenges, Tinubu struck an optimistic tone about Nigeria’s future, pointing to its youthful population, entrepreneurial drive, and resilience. “We are a nation of diverse and vibrant people, of young people dreaming big… determined to realise their full potential,” he said.

The state visit, the first by a Nigerian president to the United Kingdom in nearly four decades, is expected to further strengthen diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties between both nations.
