‘Senegal Will Remain Our Champions’ — Fans React to AFCON 2025 Controversy

Mixed reactions have continued to trail the controversial decision by the Confederation of African Football over the outcome of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), with many football fans across Africa refusing to accept the latest ruling.

Following CAF’s announcement overturning the initial result and awarding victory to Morocco after Senegal’s walk-off in the final, a wave of backlash has erupted online.

Supporters of the Senegal national football team — popularly known as the Lions of Teranga — insist that their team remains the “true champions” of Africa.

The controversy intensified after CAF’s official social media account had earlier celebrated Senegal as champions, posting: “The Lions of Teranga are African champions.”

That post has since gone viral again, fueling arguments that the decision lacks consistency.
Across platforms, fans have expressed outrage, confusion, and disappointment.

Many described the ruling as “unfair” and “politically influenced,” while others accused CAF of damaging the integrity of African football.

Some supporters wrote:
“No matter what CAF says, Senegal are our champions.”

“Football is decided on the pitch, not in boardrooms.”

“This decision has ruined AFCON 2025.”

However, a section of fans backed CAF’s verdict, arguing that rules must be enforced and that Senegal’s decision to walk off justified disciplinary action.

The situation has sparked wider debates about governance, officiating, and dispute resolution within African football, with calls growing for more transparency from CAF.

As tensions remain high, the AFCON 2025 final may be remembered less for football and more for the controversy that followed — one that continues to divide opinions across the continent.
