Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore was prevented from entering the National Assembly on Tuesday morning as protests continued over the proposed Electoral Bill 2026.
Sowore, who was leading a group of demonstrators, attempted to access the outer gate of the National Assembly. However, security personnel stationed at the entrance closed the gate, denying him and the other protesters entry.
The protest comes as public debates intensify over the bill, with demonstrators calling for greater transparency and inclusivity in the legislative process.
A rowdy session erupted in the House of Representatives on Tuesday following a heated disagreement among lawmakers over a motion relating to the revocation of the Electoral Act, leading to shouting matches and procedural confusion on the floor. The situation escalated as members clashed over the legality, timing and implications of revisiting the law, forcing presiding officers to repeatedly call for order. The disruption briefly stalled proceedings before calm was restored and the matter deferred amid calls for wider consultations.
