The Plateau State Government has ordered a clampdown on killings and unauthorized roadblocks following an emergency State Security Council meeting convened amid rising tension in Jos and other parts of the state.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang chaired the high-level meeting on Friday, attended by the Deputy Governor, senior government officials and heads of security agencies.
Addressing journalists after the session, the governor said the council reviewed security developments recorded over the past two weeks, including a mining-related incident in Wase Local Government Area and separate attacks that left several people dead.
Mutfwang described many of the deaths as avoidable and extended condolences to affected families, while warning that the government would not tolerate unlawful reprisals or attacks on travellers.
“Every life on the Plateau is sacred, and the government will not sit idle and allow people to take the law into their hands,” he said.
The governor announced that only authorised security agencies would be permitted to mount roadblocks across the state, stressing that any illegal highway obstruction would be dismantled.
He also cautioned community leaders against acts of violence within their domains, stating that leadership structures would be held accountable where attacks on travellers occur.
Responding to concerns about safety on Plateau roads, Mutfwang dismissed claims that the state had become unsafe, urging residents to remain vigilant and law-abiding.
He further warned against the spread of misinformation and inciting content on social media, noting that individuals who use online platforms to fuel violence would face consequences.
Also speaking, the Commissioner of Police, Bassey Ewah, said security agencies were deploying both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies to stabilise the situation and restore public confidence.
He assured residents that operatives were on the trail of those responsible for recent attacks and that coordinated efforts among security agencies were ongoing to prevent further incidents.
