Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, on Wednesday registered as a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress in Ogun State.
Obasanjo, who represented the Ogun Central Senatorial District in the Senate from 2003 to 2007 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, completed her online registration with the APC in Ibogun Ward 11, Ifo Local Government Area.
She confirmed the move to reporters in Abeokuta, saying she had left the PDP to join the APC. Speculation had been rife in Abeokuta, the state capital, that the former commissioner for health under the Gbenga Daniel-led PDP administration was planning to defect to the APC.
The speculation followed earlier comments by a former chairman of Abeokuta South Local Government, Biodun Ajayi, a close ally of Obasanjo, who hinted that she was set to join the ruling party. Ajayi was quoted as saying:
“I can confirm to you that Prof Iyabo Obasanjo on Tuesday at Ibogun Ward 11 of Ifo Local Government, completed her online registration as member of our great party, the All Progressives Congress.”
However, Obasanjo sought to put the speculation to rest, confirming that she had indeed joined the APC and saying she would, in due course, speak at length on her defection from the PDP.
