ICPC Recovers Alleged Wiretapping Device From El-Rufai’s Abuja Residence

Happiness Udisifan, March 2, 2026

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has recovered suspected wiretapping equipment from the Abuja residence of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai. The commission alleges the devices were capable of intercepting private conversations and accessing sensitive security documents.

Court filings reveal that the items were seized during a search conducted in the presence of El-Rufai’s wife, Hadiza El-Rufai, and his son, Mohammed Bello. The anti-graft agency says the search was part of ongoing investigations into the alleged illegal possession and use of surveillance equipment.

The ICPC stated that the former governor has so far declined to cooperate with investigators, choosing to remain silent until he is formally arraigned in court. The commission’s filing indicates that legal proceedings will determine the admissibility and relevance of the recovered equipment.

The development comes amid increased scrutiny of the use of surveillance devices in Nigeria, highlighting concerns over privacy, security, and potential abuse by public officials. Authorities say the investigation aims to establish accountability and ensure that any unlawful practices are addressed through the legal system.

El-Rufai has not yet responded publicly to the ICPC’s allegations, and the commission has scheduled further proceedings as part of its ongoing inquiry into the matter.
