The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the rescue of the remaining 13 passengers abducted during a midweek attack on a commercial bus in the state.
Gunmen had on Wednesday night ambushed a Benue Links vehicle, robbing passengers before whisking several of them into the bush, sparking widespread concern over security in the area.
In a message to journalists on Sunday, the command disclosed that all outstanding victims had now been freed, adding that a detailed briefing would be provided later in the day.
“Please note that there will be a press briefing by the Commissioner of Police concerning the rescue operation of the 13 kidnapped victims at the Command Headquarters,” the statement read.
The rescue follows earlier efforts by combined security operatives, which had led to the escape of two victims and the arrest of seven suspects linked to the incident.
According to police spokesperson, Udeme Edet, the arrests were made through coordinated intelligence-driven operations, with the suspects currently in custody as investigations continue.
Security forces had also intensified search-and-rescue missions across Amla Forest and adjoining areas, a move that ultimately led to the safe recovery of the victims, some of whom are receiving medical attention.
The police dismissed earlier reports suggesting the victims were candidates travelling for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board examination, clarifying that they were ordinary passengers on transit.
Authorities say further details of the operation and next steps in the investigation will be made public during the scheduled press briefing.
