How Excessive Social Media Use Increases Risk of Depression, Suicide — Therapist

Overuse of social media is a significant risk factor for depression and other mental health challenges, which could escalate to suicidal tendencies, a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist has warned.

Maymunah Kadiri, Medical Director of Pinnacle Medical Services, made the observation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday, citing research linking heavy social media engagement to anxiety, loneliness, self-harm, and emotional trauma.

Kadiri lamented that many people have become so dependent on social platforms that they struggle to stay offline even for a few minutes, constantly checking WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, streaming videos, or following news updates.

“Social media can be both beneficial and harmful,” she explained. “While it allows people to stay connected, share information, and seek support, excessive use can fuel anxiety, depression, and feelings of isolation.”

The therapist noted that overuse often creates a negative feedback loop. People turn to their phones to cope with loneliness, awkwardness, or stress, but this habit can further isolate them, amplifying emotional distress. “Even small interactions on social media, like liking or reacting to a post, can alter brain chemistry—triggering elation for some and dysphoria for others—which may contribute to depressive thoughts or suicidal ideation,” she added.

Kadiri defined dysphoria as “an emotional state marked by profound uneasiness and dissatisfaction, often linked to mental illness or physical conditions, which can lead to anxiety, agitation, or depression.”

She urged social media users, particularly young people, to regulate their online activity and be mindful of the psychological effects of constant exposure. “Setting limits on screen time and understanding the mental health implications of overuse are essential for maintaining wellbeing,” Kadiri said.
