Heartbreak in Rabat as Morocco End Nigeria’s AFCON Dream on Penalties

Happiness Udisifan, January 15, 2026

In a night of high stakes and heavier hearts for Nigerian fans, host nation Morocco booked their place in the Africa Cup of Nations final after a tense semi-final duel with the Super Eagles ended goalless before being decided by penalties. The marathon contest at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat on Wednesday ended 0-0 after extra time, but Morocco triumphed 4-2 in the shootout, crushing Nigeria’s dream of a continental final.

The match itself was a tactical chess game rather than an open spectacle. Both teams battled through ninety minutes and extra time without finding the breakthrough, as defences stood firm and opportunities were at a premium. Nigeria — the tournament’s highest scorers heading into the semifinal, struggled to assert their famed attacking threat, with limited clear chances and talismanic striker Victor Osimhen largely contained.

The drama peaked in the penalty shootout, where Morocco’s goalkeeper Yassine Bounou emerged as the hero, producing crucial saves to deny Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi, while Youssef En-Nesyri calmly converted the decisive spot kick to spark wild celebrations among the passionate home crowd.

For Nigeria, the loss prolongs semi-final heartbreak in major tournaments and shifts focus to the third place playoff against Egypt, while Morocco now prepares to face defending champions Senegal in the AFCON final and chase their first continental crown in half a century.
