FG Cracks Down on Fake ‘Ambassadors,’ Warns of Prosecution for Title Abuse

Soliu Oyesiji, April 20, 2026

The federal government has issued a stern warning against the unauthorised use and conferment of diplomatic titles, particularly “Ambassador,” describing the practice as illegal and deceptive.

In a statement released last Friday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed concern over what it called a growing trend of individuals falsely adopting diplomatic designations to mislead the public.

The ministry stated that titles such as “Ambassador” and “Diplomatic Envoy” are strictly regulated and can only be granted through formal government processes.

“The improper use of such titles is a criminal act,” the statement said, adding that the activities of “unscrupulous individuals” have become increasingly worrisome.

It also warned that the use of fake diplomatic passports, identity cards, and vehicle plates bearing national insignia constitutes a violation of the law.

According to the ministry, some individuals have gone as far as using the titles in official correspondence and engagements with foreign embassies, a situation it said has embarrassed the federal government.

“Some of the persons illegally parading themselves as ambassadors have engaged with foreign missions, causing serious embarrassment to the government,” it said.

The ministry emphasised that only the president has the authority to appoint and accredit ambassadors, stressing that no individual, group, or organisation is permitted to confer such titles.

It further clarified that ambassadorial designations cannot be legitimately obtained through payments, donations, or affiliations with any organisation.

While acknowledging the use of “brand ambassador” in the private sector, the ministry noted that such roles are purely symbolic and carry no diplomatic or legal status.

The government warned that anyone found impersonating diplomats or involved in the illegal conferment of titles would be prosecuted, adding that security agencies have been mobilised to track and apprehend offenders.

It reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Nigeria’s image, stating that actions capable of misrepresenting the country or bringing it into disrepute would not be tolerated.
