South-West PDP Hails Makinde, Dismisses Impeachment Rumours as Baseless

Soliu Oyesiji, April 20, 2026April 20, 2026

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South-West has commended Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, for what it described as his consistent efforts in strengthening Nigeria’s multi-party democracy and ensuring a stable political environment.

Speaking at a press conference in Ibadan on Monday, the Zonal Executives of the party said Makinde had remained firm in promoting political inclusiveness and safeguarding space for opposition participation.

The Zonal Publicity Secretary, Sanya Atofarati, told journalists that the governor’s leadership had reinforced democratic governance in the country.

According to him, “the party in the zone stands firmly behind Makinde. His administration continues to demonstrate stability, focus, and an unwavering commitment to delivering democratic dividends to the people of Oyo State.”

Atofarati also dismissed recent reports suggesting a planned impeachment move against the governor, describing them as unfounded and politically motivated.

“The alleged impeachment plot is baseless, contrived, and should be disregarded by all well-meaning Nigerians. It is nothing more than a calculated attempt to create unnecessary political tension,” he said.

He added that the South-West PDP remained committed to defending democratic values while also expressing concern over the country’s economic hardship, insecurity, and general uncertainty.

The party, he said, is positioning itself as a credible alternative focused on people-oriented governance, stability, and national development.

Atofarati further called on Nigerians to remain calm and united, urging them to resist any attempts by political actors to incite crisis for personal gain.

He also reaffirmed the zone’s loyalty to the national leadership of the party under the Umar Damagum-led National Working Committee (NWC), stressing commitment to unity, discipline, and cohesion within the PDP.

“The PDP appreciates Nigerians for their resilience and continued belief in the party, and we assure them of our commitment to responsible leadership and a better future,” he added.
