The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed an aatack by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) on a military base in Benisheikh, Borno State, but did not address reports alleging the killing of a Brigade Commander during the incident.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the DHQ said troops under Operation Hadin Kai successfully repelled the coordinated attack on the base.
According to the military, the incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. when insurgents attempted to infiltrate the Headquarters of the 29 Task Force Brigade in Benisheikh.
The statement noted that troops responded with “superior firepower,” forcing the attackers to retreat and abandon their mission.
The DHQ described the attack as an act of desperation by terrorist groups following setbacks suffered in ongoing military operations across the North-East.
While confirming casualties among soldiers, the military did not comment on reports claiming that Brigadier-General O. O. Braimah was killed during the assault.
It added that the Chief of Defence Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, has paid tribute to the fallen troops and extended condolences to their families.
The DHQ stated that more details would be made public after the next of kin of the deceased personnel have been duly informed.
It also urged the public to ignore unverified reports and misinformation circulating on social media.
Meanwhile, troops have continued clearance operations in the area to track down fleeing insurgents and prevent any regrouping.
The military reaffirmed its commitment to ongoing counter-terrorism efforts and called on citizens to support security agencies with credible intelligence.
