PSG Thrash Chelsea 5–2 as Kvaratskhelia Nets Late Brace

Chelsea suffered a heavy 5–2 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 clash.

The Blues kept pace with the reigning European champions for much of the contest and twice fought back to level the score. However, a costly goalkeeping error from Filip Jorgensen allowed Vitinha to restore PSG’s lead in the 74th minute, triggering a late collapse from Liam Rosenior’s side.

The result leaves Chelsea facing a difficult task in next week’s second leg at Stamford Bridge, as only four teams in Champions League history have progressed after losing the first leg of a knockout tie by three or more goals.

Speaking after the match, Rosenior admitted his team struggled to recover after falling behind.

“We didn’t react well to a setback. At 3–2 we were still in the tie, but then Kvaratskhelia produced an incredible strike and the momentum shifted,” he said.

“The fifth goal came after a flashpoint where we lost our composure. At this level, those moments are punished. It makes the comeback very difficult, but it’s not impossible.”

PSG entered the game under pressure following a defeat to Monaco last Friday, with several players facing criticism over their form. Bradley Barcola responded in style, opening the scoring with a powerful strike that crashed in off the underside of the crossbar.

The goal ended Barcola’s 17-game scoring drought in the Champions League and marked his first in the competition since February 2025. It also continued his strong run of form, as he has now scored in three consecutive appearances for PSG across all competitions for the first time since January 2025.

Chelsea found an equaliser before the half-hour mark after Barcola switched off defensively, allowing an unmarked Malo Gusto to fire in a shot that slipped past goalkeeper Matvei Safonov and into the net.
