Atletico Madrid have secured a place in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals for the first time since the 2016/17 season after edging past FC Barcelona 3-2 on aggregate.
Diego Simeone’s side carried a 2-0 advantage into the second leg at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, but saw their lead vanish within 25 minutes as Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres struck for Barcelona.
However, Atletico responded in style, with Ademola Lookman finishing off a brilliant team move to restore their aggregate lead.
The hosts maintained control in the second half, limiting Barcelona’s impact despite the introduction of Marcus Rashford and Robert Lewandowski.
Barcelona’s hopes of a late comeback were effectively ended in the closing stages when Eric Garcia was sent off for a last-man foul on Alexander Sørloth.
Atletico will now face the winner between Arsenal FC and Sporting CP in the semi-finals, with the first leg scheduled for April 28 or 29 and the return leg set for May 5 or 6.
