Real Madrid Defeat Man City as Valverde Hits Hat-Trick

Federico Valverde delivered a sensational first-half hat trick as Real Madrid secured a commanding 3–0 victory over Manchester City in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round-of-16 clash on Wednesday.

Heading into the match at the Santiago Bernabéu, there had been some concern among Madrid supporters. The Spanish giants are adjusting to a new and relatively untested coach, had recently suffered back-to-back league defeats, and needed a late deflection to edge past Celta Vigo last weekend.

However, Valverde quickly eased those doubts with a brilliant treble that put Madrid firmly in control of the highly anticipated tie. The midfielder also made history by becoming the first Uruguayan player to score a hat trick in the Champions League.

“It’s incredible — you always dream of nights like this,” Valverde said after the game. “I want to thank my teammates for the confidence they’ve given me, the coaching staff, and everyone who continues to support us even during a difficult season. I really enjoyed this match; it’s been a while since I felt this way on the pitch.”

Valverde opened the scoring in the 20th minute, finishing off a swift counterattack before calmly rounding goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and slotting the ball into the net.

Seven minutes later, he doubled Madrid’s lead, racing onto a pass from Vinícius Júnior and firing a low shot past the keeper with his weaker left foot.

The Uruguayan saved the best for last just before halftime. Latching onto a clever chipped pass from Brahim Díaz, he skillfully lifted the ball over Marc Guéhi’s outstretched leg before volleying it past Donnarumma to complete his hat trick and give Madrid a 3–0 lead.

Vinícius later missed a second-half penalty that could have extended the advantage, but Madrid had already done enough to secure a comfortable win, with City posing only occasional threats throughout the match.

The sides will meet again for the second leg in Manchester next Tuesday, with Pep Guardiola’s team facing a daunting task to overturn the deficit.

The defeat also capped a disappointing spell for English teams in the Spanish capital, following Tottenham’s 5–2 loss to Atlético Madrid the previous day.

Manchester City had actually started brightly, looking to test the Madrid defense early on. Antoine Semenyo forced a save from Thibaut Courtois, while the lively Jérémy Doku twice delivered dangerous balls across the face of goal.

Nico O’Reilly also came close, and Bernardo Silva volleyed wide as the visitors attempted to exploit any weakness in the Real Madrid lineup, but Valverde’s brilliance ultimately proved decisive.
