2027: Consensus Approach Will Produce Credible Candidates – Iyabo Obasanjo

David Egbede, March 26, 2026

Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has endorsed the use of a consensus approach in selecting All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Thursday, the Ogun State governorship aspirant said the consensus method would yield credible and electable candidates.

She dismissed concerns that the process could impose unpopular choices, stressing that consensus does not override the will of the people.

“I strongly believe consensus can produce the right candidates because it doesn’t mean party leaders ignore the people’s will; it means they carefully consider public opinion.

“No party wants to lose, so they won’t pick candidates that could jeopardize their chances,” she said.

She added that the process would naturally favour aspirants with real grassroots support and electoral strength.

“In the end, consensus will align with those who can actually win on the ground, because victory is the party’s main objective.

“They won’t settle for the least popular option in a way that creates conflict among aspirants or discourages strong contenders. That’s why I’m convinced consensus is the best approach,” she stated.

Obasanjo also expressed confidence that the arrangement would work to her advantage in the race for the Ogun APC governorship ticket, pointing to her popularity and previous performance in public office as both a commissioner and a senator.
