A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday at Fegge in Onitsha, Anambra State, when an 18-year-old apprentice reportedly killed his master during a violent altercation. The victim, identified as Iyke, was a businessman at the popular Ogbo-Ogwu Bridgehead Medicine Market.
According to eyewitnesses, the apprentice, Chiemerie, allegedly attacked Iyke after being scolded over repeated misbehaviour, including taking drugs and allegedly pilfering money. Tensions escalated when the apprentice reportedly picked up a mortar pestle from the kitchen and struck his master on the head, resulting in fatal injuries.
Community members at the market expressed shock at the incident, describing the event as “completely unexpected” given the usual dynamic between apprentices and their bosses. Residents said Iyke was well known in the area for his business activities and that his death has left many in mourning.
The Anambra State Police Command has launched an investigation and is reportedly holding the suspect in custody. Authorities have appealed to the public to allow the law to take its course, stressing the need for justice while urging caution in dealing with disputes.
