Zamfara PDP Chairman Dumps Party, Decamps to APC

David Egbede, March 12, 2026March 12, 2026

The Zamfara State chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Jamil Jibo Magayaki, has resigned from the party and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Magayaki announced his decision in a statement released to journalists on Thursday, citing recent political developments in Zamfara State as the reason for his defection.

His departure comes shortly after the state Governor, Dauda Lawal, left the PDP for the APC on Monday following consultations with political stakeholders, party leaders, elders, and supporters across the state.

In his statement, Magayaki stated:

“I, Dr. Jamil Jibo Magayaki, the Zamfara State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, hereby announce my formal defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress.”

He explained that the move was driven by the current political realities in the state and the need to align with a platform he believes is better positioned to address issues affecting residents.

“My decision to join the APC is based on the prevailing political situation in Zamfara State, which requires aligning with a party capable of tackling the challenges of security, development, and effective governance for the benefit of our people,” he said.

Magayaki’s defection is the latest in a series of political shifts in the state as preparations gradually build toward the 2027 general elections.

Governor Lawal, while announcing his own defection earlier in March, cited internal disagreements within the PDP and the need for stronger political collaboration to confront security and developmental challenges in the state.

In recent months, the PDP in Zamfara has witnessed several defections, including members of the State House of Assembly and numerous party supporters who have moved to the APC.
