Xenophobia: NANS Urges FG to Protect Nigerian Students in South Africa

David Egbede, April 29, 2026

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on Wednesday called on the Federal Government to take urgent steps to safeguard Nigerian students in South Africa amid rising xenophobic tensions.

The call is contained in a statement by Comrade Aneke Kenechukwu, NANS’ Vice President, External Affairs.

Kenechukwu said recent reports indicated a disturbing pattern of hostility and targeted attacks against foreign nationals, particularly Nigerians.

He said that the development had left many Nigerian students in fear and uncertainty, describing their protection as a national emergency.

He urged the Federal Government to engage South African authorities through diplomatic channels to secure firm guarantees for the safety of Nigerian citizens, especially students.

Kenechukwu called for the activation of diplomatic mechanisms to monitor the situation and ensure that perpetrators of xenophobic violence are brought to justice.

The student leader further appealed for the provision of emergency support for affected students, including safe shelters, dedicated hotlines, and financial assistance where necessary.

He also advocated a coordinated evacuation plan for Nigerian students willing to return home to prevent further exposure to risks.

“Diplomacy remains the most responsible path, but it must be proactive, firm, and result-oriented. Nigerian lives must not be left to bureaucratic delay,” he said.

Kenechukwu  urged the government to collaborate with Nigerian diplomatic missions, international partners, and the association to ensure that no student is left stranded or vulnerable.

He stressed that immediate action was needed, warning that delays could endanger lives.
