Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface will miss the remainder of the season after his club, Werder Bremen, confirmed that the Nigerian international is set to undergo knee surgery.
The 25-year-old has made 11 appearances for Bremen this season since joining on loan from Bayer Leverkusen but has yet to score a goal.
Boniface missed Bremen’s final two matches of 2025 due to the knee issue, which also prevented him from joining Nigeria’s squad for the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Following a consultation with a specialist in Austria, Werder Bremen confirmed that the striker will undergo surgery and is expected to be sidelined for several months.
“We are happy that we now have a solution to let Victor perform a surgery. There is clarity for all parties,”Werder Bremen doctor Peter Niemeyer said. “Due to the rehabilitation process, we no longer assume that Victor will still be available for Werder this season.”
The club also said his loan deal until the end of 2025/26 will not be cut short, while Leverkusen’s club doctors were also involved in the decision.
Boniface scored 22 goals over 42 Bundesliga appearances for the Werkself, including 14 in their 2023/24 title-winning season.
