‘Stay focused and bring home the trophy’ – Akpabio tells Super Eagles after AFCON semi-final qualification

David Egbede, January 12, 2026

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has congratulated the Super Eagles on qualifying for the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), encouraging the team to maintain their winning form and go on to claim the championship.

Akpabio’s message comes after Nigeria’s convincing 2–0 win over Algeria in the quarter-final match played in Marrakech, Morocco.

The congratulatory message was conveyed on Sunday through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh. In the statement, the Senate President described the Super Eagles as the “pride of Nigeria,” commending their discipline, resilience and strong team spirit, which he said have inspired Nigerians both at home and abroad.

“I warmly congratulate the Super Eagles on their impressive 2–0 victory over Algeria, which secured a deserved place in the AFCON semi-finals,” Akpabio said.

He noted that the team’s performance highlights their commitment and determination to excel at the continental level, adding that their success has brought joy and pride to the nation.

“You are the pride of the country. This achievement reflects your hard work and resolve, and it has made Nigerians proud,” he added.

Looking ahead, Akpabio urged the players to remain focused as they prepare for a challenging semi-final clash against host nation Morocco on Wednesday.

“The 10th Senate and all Nigerians stand firmly behind you. Stay focused, keep the momentum going, and bring the trophy home,” he said.
