Trump Escalates Iran Standoff, Threatens Strikes on Power Plants and Bridges Amid Fresh Talks

Soliu Oyesiji, April 19, 2026

US President Donald Trump has renewed his hardline rhetoric against Iran, warning of possible large-scale attacks on the country’s infrastructure if ongoing diplomatic efforts fail to produce a deal.

In a post on his Truth Social platform on Sunday, Trump declared, “NO MORE MR. NICE GUY,” adding that US negotiators were being dispatched to Pakistan on Monday evening for talks linked to Iran. He did not identify the officials involved.

Trump said that if Iran refuses to agree to Washington’s terms, the United States would target key national assets.

“Without a deal, we are going to knock out every single Power Plant, and every single Bridge, in Iran,” he warned, while insisting that the US was still presenting a “fair and reasonable deal” which Tehran should accept.

The renewed threat comes as a fragile two-week ceasefire nears its expiration following earlier US-Israeli strikes on Iran in February, which triggered wider tensions across the Middle East.

A previous round of talks held in Islamabad on April 11 ended without agreement, although diplomatic groundwork has continued.

No date has been confirmed for a second negotiation round, while senior Iranian officials have maintained that both sides remain far from any final settlement.

Iran’s parliament speaker and chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, said on Saturday that discussions were still at an early stage, while Tehran continues to insist on its right to maintain its nuclear programme — a position Washington strongly opposes.

The nuclear dispute remains central to the crisis, with the US accusing Iran of seeking weapons capability, an allegation Tehran denies.

Tensions have also been compounded by disputes over Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile and strategic control of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil shipping route that has repeatedly been threatened with closure during the conflict.

Security preparations have intensified in Pakistan ahead of the expected talks, with road closures, checkpoints, and heavy security presence reported around key hotels in Islamabad and neighbouring Rawalpindi.

Meanwhile, maritime tensions in the Gulf remain high, with shipping disruptions, military warnings, and intermittent closures of the Strait of Hormuz adding pressure to already strained global energy markets.
