Power Shift in NURTW as Baruwa Replaces MC Oluomo at National Secretariat

David Egbede, March 23, 2026March 23, 2026

Amid the ongoing leadership crisis within the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Tajudeen Baruwa has taken over the union’s national secretariat in Abuja, displacing Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo.

Baruwa said the move followed court rulings that favoured him as the legitimate president of the union.

Addressing journalists at the secretariat, he described the takeover as peaceful and in line with judicial directives, not a forceful action.

He explained that the union had informed the police ahead of the move and submitted copies of the court judgments, though he expressed disappointment over the police response.

According to him, the union waited for about two years after securing favourable judgments before deciding to reclaim the office.

Baruwa added that despite tensions, the process remained largely calm, although a member of his group was reportedly attacked by the opposing faction.

He maintained that the union remains open to reconciliation, stressing that no one is above the law.

Also speaking, General Secretary Suleiman Musa said those occupying the secretariat had refused to vacate despite repeated appeals.

The takeover is backed by rulings from the National Industrial Court and the Court of Appeal in Abuja, both of which upheld Baruwa’s position as the duly elected president, bringing a level of legal closure to the prolonged leadership dispute.
