The Jigawa State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested a 50-year-old scrap dealer for allegedly vandalising electrical cables in the state.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASC Badruddeen Tijjani Mahmud.
According to the statement, the suspect was apprehended in Maruwa town, Kafin Hausa Local Government Area, with about 267 metres of aluminium cable believed to have been vandalised, valued at approximately ₦573,300.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the cable was allegedly brought to the suspect’s residence for safekeeping by two individuals identified as Sani and Auwalu, both from Ruba village in Kafin Hausa Local Government Area. The two suspects are currently at large.
The statement added that the arrested suspect is presently in custody, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing accomplices and bring them to justice.
Reacting to the incident, the State Commandant of the NSCDC in Jigawa State warned individuals involved in the vandalism of critical national assets and infrastructure to desist from such illegal activities or face the full weight of the law.
The Commandant also called on members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities around public infrastructure to security agencies across the state.
The NSCDC reiterated its commitment to protecting critical national assets and infrastructure, as well as ensuring the safety of lives and property in Jigawa State.
