Nigeria Moves to Expand Internet Connectivity Across Schools

David Egbede, March 11, 2026March 11, 2026

The Federal Government has intensified efforts to improve digital learning by expanding internet connectivity across schools nationwide.

The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, held a strategic meeting with the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, to strengthen collaboration aimed at connecting schools across the country to reliable internet services.

The initiative, which aligns with the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is expected to expand digital infrastructure across educational institutions and support modern learning methods.

According to the ministers, the programme will build on the work of the Nigerian Research and Education Network to extend connectivity to primary and secondary schools, as well as universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.

Alausa said the collaboration is aimed at preparing Nigerian students for a rapidly evolving digital world.

“Our goal is to ensure that students across Nigeria have access to reliable internet connectivity that will support modern teaching methods and digital learning,” he said.

He added that expanding digital infrastructure would help bridge the technological gap in the education sector.

“By working closely with the Ministry of Communications, we are building the foundation for a technology-driven education system that equips our students with the skills needed for the future,” the minister said.

The programme is also expected to support emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and facilitate the gradual transition to computer-based testing for national examinations.

Tijani noted that improved connectivity would strengthen Nigeria’s knowledge economy and open up new opportunities for students and educators.

“Expanding internet access across our schools is critical to enabling innovation, digital learning and preparing young Nigerians for the opportunities of a digital economy,” he said.

The initiative forms part of broader efforts by the Federal Government to modernise the education sector and integrate technology into teaching, learning and assessment nationwide.
