Nigeria has joined 106 other member states of the United Nations General Assembly in voting to support Ukraine, marking the fourth anniversary of Russia’s invasion on February 24, 2022. The decision was taken during an emergency special session held on Tuesday.
The resolution, titled “Support for lasting peace in Ukraine,” was adopted with 107 countries voting in favour, 12 against, and 51 abstaining a group that included the United States. The vote underscored continued global divisions over the war, even as calls for an end to hostilities grow louder.
By backing the resolution, Nigeria aligned itself with demands for a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine. The measure calls for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, the exchange of prisoners of war, and the safe return of civilians forcibly transferred during the conflict, including children.
The emergency session reflects sustained international concern over the war’s humanitarian and geopolitical impact. Four years after the invasion began, the General Assembly’s vote signals renewed diplomatic pressure aimed at halting the fighting and advancing a negotiated peace.
