The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) aimed at strengthening training and compliance with International Humanitarian Law (IHL) among its personnel.

The agreement was signed on March 11, 2026, by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, and James Matthews of the ICRC, marking a strategic partnership focused on enhancing humanitarian standards in military operations.

Under the agreement, both parties will collaborate to expand training and capacity development in International Humanitarian Law, ensuring that NAF personnel are better equipped to conduct operations in line with global humanitarian principles.

The partnership is also expected to institutionalize IHL training within the Nigerian Air Force, improve awareness of lawful engagement during military operations, and integrate humanitarian considerations into operational planning in order to reduce civilian harm.

Officials say the initiative will further strengthen professionalism within the Air Force while promoting respect for humanitarian norms during conflict situations.

Beyond training, the collaboration is also intended to support humanitarian access and contribute to restoring stability in regions affected by insecurity across Nigeria.

The MoU underscores growing cooperation between the Nigerian military and international humanitarian organizations aimed at ensuring security operations are conducted in line with international standards.
