Kwara United Football Club has tendered a heartfelt apology after violent disturbances disrupted the end of their rescheduled Gameweek 22 fixture against Rivers United FC on Wednesday.
The much-anticipated match, which finished 1–1 at the Kwara State Stadium in Ilorin, was sadly marred by unfortunate scenes of crowd unrest that overshadowed the contest.
In an official statement released Wednesday night after the incident, Kwara United expressed deep regret over the “unfortunate incidents of violence” that occurred.
The club vehemently condemned the actions of those involved, emphasizing that such behaviour is antithetical to the spirit of football and the values the club upholds.
Eyewitness accounts described a charged atmosphere during the game, which eventually boiled over into clashes after the final whistle. Although the precise cause of the violence is still being investigated, the club’s prompt apology underscores its determination to confront the situation and preserve the integrity of the sport.
“Kwara United FC strongly condemns these acts,” the statement read. “Such behaviour has no place in our sport and goes against everything we stand for – sportsmanship, respect, and unity.”
