The Imo State Police Command has arrested a 24-year-old man, identified as Wisdom Onyeaju, over the alleged defilement of a 15-year-old girl in the state.
The Command also confirmed that police officers accused of professional misconduct in the handling of the case have been identified and detained for investigation.
The arrest followed public outrage after a video posted on January 3 by the victim’s sister went viral on social media. In the video, she alleged that the suspect forcefully gained access to the family’s home during the Christmas period, threatened the minor with a knife, and sexually assaulted her.
The victim’s sister further alleged that officers at a police station located near the Government House in Owerri demanded ₦100,000 from the family before agreeing to record the victim’s statement. The allegation triggered widespread condemnation online, with calls for accountability and justice.
In response, the Imo State Police Command said it has commenced a thorough investigation into both the alleged crime and the conduct of the officers involved. The Command confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody, while the officers implicated in the alleged extortion and mishandling of the case have been detained pending the outcome of internal disciplinary procedures.
The Police reiterated their commitment to professionalism, accountability, and the protection of minors, assuring the public that appropriate actions will be taken in line with the findings of the investigation.
