‘I’m Bigger Than Fela,’ – Wizkid Replies Seun Kuti

Rejoice Ewodage, January 21, 2026January 21, 2026

Nigerian superstar Wizkid has responded to days of criticism from Seun Kuti, who accused the singer’s fans of disrespecting his late father, the legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti.

Seun had warned against comparing contemporary artists to his father, describing such comparisons as disrespectful and an attempt to “steal the man’s image.”

He specifically accused Wizkid’s fan base, popularly known as Wizkid FC, of undermining Fela’s legacy by drawing parallels between the Afrobeat icon and the Grammy-winning singer.

But Wizkid appeared unfazed by the criticism. Taking to his Instagram Stories, the singer fired back in a strongly worded response, declaring himself bigger than the Afrobeat legend and directly addressing Seun in the post.

He wrote: “Fela fight for freedom this one dey fight fc!! I big pass your papa, wetin you wan do? @bigbirdkuti I’m Big Wiz everyday bigger than your papa!! Wetin u one do”, reposting alongside it a video of a fan who argued that Wizkid has done more to introduce Fela Kuti’s music to a younger generation.

As the back-and-forth between the two artists spilled into midweek, Seun Kuti escalated the exchange with a series of posts on his Instagram Stories, this time dragging American rap star Sean Diddy Combs into the conversation.

In one of the posts, Seun appeared to take a swipe at Wizkid’s global connections, writing: “Free Diddy, His Lagos babe is missing him @Wizkidayo.”

Moments later, he followed up by sharing an old video of Wizkid during a visit to Diddy in Miami, further fueling debate across social media.

Wizkid, however, wasted little time responding. In another sharp post, the singer fired back, writing: “We all know who be Diddy babe for Naija. If na chain you want, come collect ooo. Make una free me, my mouth no good.”

The exchange sparked a wave of reactions online, drawing applause from some quarters and criticism from others. Reacting on X, media personality @PoojaMedia framed Wizkid’s response as a strategic win, writing, “Wizkid coming out to defend FC is the biggest win in this back & forth with Seun Kuti. He has locked their loyalty down heavily in 2026. Projects with Asake on the way, new singles & concerts across the world – The beef is a win for him. Business strategist.”

Other users took firmer positions. One fan, identified as @itzbasito, dismissed the comparisons altogether, writing, “Fela Kuti can’t even stand King Sunny Ade’s music achievements.”

Another user, @Buchi_Laba, pointed to Wizkid’s long-standing admiration for the Afrobeat icon, saying, “Wizkid looks to Fela! Has a full Tattoo of Fela on this Body!”

Still, some defended Wizkid’s decision to respond. @Mbahdeyforyou argued, “People faulting Wizkid for replying to Seun Kuti are just big hypocrites. You can’t drag someone for close to 7days and get surprised when he replies. FELA remains the greatest tho.”

Others laid the blame squarely at Seun Kuti’s feet. @YKoluwaseun9 wrote, “Any disrespect way Fela dey see today na Seun cause am,” while @blackebony28 added, “Wizkid came out to speak today cuz he loves his fans.”
