‘Remove My Father’s Tattoo’: Seun Kuti, Wizkid Clash Over Fela’s Legacy

Rejoice Ewodage, January 21, 2026

Seun Kuti has intensified his social media campaign against what he calls “destroyers” masquerading as fan bases, a conflict that has since escalated into a high-profile clash with Nigerian superstar Wizkid over the legacy of his late father, Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

In a series of daily video posts, one notably titled ‘Oloriburuku FC. Destroy the destoryers‘, Seun lashed out at toxic fan culture, accusing groups of supporters of distorting music history and forcing disrespectful comparisons in the name of online loyalty. While Wizkid FC featured prominently, Seun made it clear that his criticism was aimed broadly at fan bases he said had become “destroyers” of legacy.

Addressing the growing comparisons between Wizkid and his father, Seun acknowledged that admiration for Fela was not the issue, but insisted that liking the Afrobeat icon did not absolve anyone of responsibility when fan behaviour crossed the line.

He said, “Some people came to meet me saying you know, Wizkid likes Fela, he talks about Fela. Yes I understand that Wizkid likes Fela but he doesn’t like Fela enough to tell his fans to stop. And I understand that. It’s not his job to defend Fela even if he likes Fela Die. It’s his family’s job.”

Seun also underscored Fela’s stature, highlighting his historical and musical significance. “According to the Guinness World Records, Fela is the most recorded artiste in the world, churning out 52 records,” he said. “No be only say he create genre.”

The back-and-forth intensified after Wizkid eventually responded publicly, dismissing the criticisms and insisting he was bigger than Fela. What began as Seun’s critique of fan culture quickly turned into a personal confrontation, prompting Seun to escalate the rhetoric.

In a fresh series of Instagram Stories on Tuesday, Seun dragged American rap star Sean Diddy Combs into the feud, posting: “Free Diddy, His Lagos babe is missing him @Wizkidayo,” before sharing an old video of Wizkid during a visit to Diddy in Miami.

The tension reached its peak during a live video session on Wednesday, when Seun directly addressed Wizkid and demanded he remove a tattoo of Fela from his body.

He said, “Wizkid remove my father’s (Fela Kuti) tattoo on your arm and replace it with your father’s head, if you won’t do it you will never use your hands to do great things in life, nobody in my family rates you again, You have Fela Kuti’s tattoo on your body, but you carry beef in your heart. There’s a difference between being inspired and trying to replace. WizKid’s real dream is to replace Fela.”

Wizkid later fired back on social media, defending himself and his fan base, further fueling the online standoff. In one post, he wrote, “I Big pass your papa. Wetin you won do? Fool at 40.”

The feud has since divided social media, with some users backing Seun’s defense of Fela’s legacy, while others accused him of turning a broader debate about fan culture into a personal confrontation.
