The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has rolled out a specialised Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) across all states and the Federal Capital Territory to combat rising insecurity nationwide.
Effective May 2, 2026, the new unit is designed to deliver rapid, intelligence-driven responses to serious crimes including kidnapping, armed robbery, murder, and cult-related violence.
It will also enhance coordination among police commands across the country.
As part of the reform, non-specialised tactical teams at the state level will be dissolved and integrated into the VCRU to strengthen efficiency and professionalism within the force.
The initiative also includes upgrading forensic laboratories, boosting digital intelligence systems, and improving the national criminal database to support modern investigations.
Additionally, the Police Mobile Force will now focus strictly on riot control and violent crime operations, with officers withdrawn from non-core duties like VIP escort.
The IGP emphasized that all personnel must operate within the law, upholding professionalism and respect for human rights as the force works to restore public confidence and improve national security.
