Gravina Steps Down as Italy FA President After World Cup Failure

David Egbede, April 2, 2026

Gabriele Gravina has resigned as president of Italy’s football federation amid mounting pressure, just days after the national team failed to qualify for a third consecutive World Cup.

His exit is expected to trigger further changes, including the possible departure of head coach Gennaro Gattuso.

Italy’s Sports Minister, Andrea Abodi, had earlier called for sweeping reforms in the country’s football leadership, saying the system requires a complete overhaul starting with new leadership.

The Azzurri’s hopes of reaching the 2026 World Cup ended after a penalty shootout loss to Bosnia and Herzegovina in a qualifying playoff. The latest setback adds to previous playoff eliminations against Sweden and North Macedonia.

Gravina, who took charge in 2018, succeeded Carlo Tavecchio, who also stepped down after a World Cup qualification failure. While his tenure included Italy’s Euro 2021 triumph, recent struggles on the global stage have intensified scrutiny.

A new federation president is set to be elected on June 22, while Gravina is expected to address Italy’s parliament on the future of football in the country.
