The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) are set to officially ratify a major agreement previously reached to promote industrial harmony and enhance teaching and learning conditions in Nigerian universities.

The pact is also designed to support sustainable development within the country’s university system. This was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by Folasade Boriowo, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education.

According to Boriowo, the formal unveiling of the agreement is scheduled for Wednesday, January 14, in Abuja. The event will be chaired by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, alongside the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad.

She described the occasion as a major step in the Federal Government’s efforts to build a stable, efficient and globally competitive higher education sector. The agreement, she said, reflects the government’s strong commitment to engaging key stakeholders constructively and resolving industrial disputes through continuous dialogue, mutual respect and collaboration.

Boriowo noted that the agreement is expected to further promote industrial peace across universities, create a more supportive academic environment, and boost confidence among students, academic staff and the general public.

She added that the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which positions education as a critical catalyst for national development, human capital advancement and socio-economic progress.

The ceremony is expected to attract top government officials, ASUU representatives, heads of tertiary institutions, development partners and members of the media. Boriowo reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to sustaining reforms aimed at strengthening the university system and delivering quality, accessible and globally competitive education for Nigerians.
