Lawyer and public commentator Dele Farotimi has stated that President Bola Tinubu appointed former presidential aide Reno Omokri as Nigeria’s ambassador to Mexico following his controversial remarks about drug cartels.
In an interview with The Citizenship Project, Farotimi discussed Omokri’s new diplomatic assignment and highlighted the potential security risks associated with the posting.
He urged the federal government to take necessary measures to ensure that Omokri is adequately protected while performing his duties in Mexico.
The human rights activist said Omokri had previously made several remarks about drug cartels, and this could place him in a sensitive position now that he has been sent to serve in Mexico.
He added that the government must put strong security measures in place for the new ambassador.
Farotimi pointed out that the authorities should provide Omokri with high-level protection, including the use of bulletproof vehicles and protective vests.
He stated that such safety measures would be necessary to guard against any danger that could arise during his diplomatic service in the country.
“You sent Omokri to Mexico after he had been busy running his mouth about drug cartels. Oh well, he had better make sure that he has a lot of bulletproof cars and vests in that place that he has gone to.
“But whenever I speak on these things, let us understand clearly that I speak so you will understand that a window has been opened into how Nigeria operates.”
