The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development has directed the introduction of a hybrid access gate payment system at Nigerian airports, allowing both cash and electronic payments.
The announcement was made in a statement issued on Tuesday by Tunde Moshood, Special Adviser on Media and Communications to the Minister.
The move follows the earlier suspension of the fully cashless system, initially implemented under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, which had caused significant traffic congestion at airport entrances.
During a meeting with officials of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and senior ministry staff, the Minister reviewed the rollout of the cashless system and the operational challenges it posed.

Following the review, the Ministry confirmed that a hybrid payment system will resume at all airport access gates starting Friday, March 13, 2026, while work continues toward a fully automated electronic system.
Motorists who already possess FAAN Go Cashless Cards are allowed to continue to use them, while other electronic payment options, including POS terminals and approved digital channels, will remain available.
The Ministry also announced plans to engage concessionaires to implement a fully automated system in the future, with the goal of eventually eliminating cash payments entirely.
Members of the public and road users are encouraged to obtain and use the FAAN Go Cashless Card as the Authority works to enhance and optimize the cashless system.
The directive restores the previous access gate payment arrangement while providing a transition toward a fully electronic system.
