Confusion broke out on Saturday during the congress of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Taraba State after two different individuals were announced as the party’s consensus chairman.
The controversy began when a member of the congress committee declared Dr Victor Samuel Falack as the consensus chairman of the party in the state.
Delegates and party supporters at the venue reportedly applauded the announcement, believing the process had been successfully concluded.
However, the situation changed moments later when another committee member, said to have just arrived from Abuja, interrupted the proceedings and announced a different person as the state chairman.
The unexpected declaration caused confusion among delegates, many of whom demanded clarification from the committee.
The development led to heated arguments between supporters, with several party members insisting that Falack had already been confirmed as the consensus candidate.
Tensions escalated as some aggrieved delegates protested and walked out of the venue, chanting slogans and insisting that the initial announcement be respected.
Some members also described the second candidate as unfamiliar within the party’s structure in the state, accusing the committee of trying to impose a chairman.
Attempts by party officials to calm the situation reportedly failed as tempers continued to rise.
As of the time of filing this report, the final outcome of the congress remained unclear, with members calling on the national leadership of the PDP to intervene and resolve the dispute.
