Doctors Begin Nationwide Strike Over Unpaid Arrears

David Egbede, April 7, 2026April 7, 2026

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors has commenced a nationwide strike on Tuesday, raising concerns about disruptions across federal and state hospitals.

The action follows unresolved disputes with the Federal Government over unpaid allowances and policy changes affecting doctors’ welfare. The association described the situation as “unfortunate,” accusing authorities of forcing them into another avoidable strike.

After deliberations, NARD’s leadership resolved to embark on a “total and comprehensive strike,” demanding immediate payment of salary and promotion arrears, settlement of 19 months’ outstanding allowances, and the release of the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund.

At the heart of the crisis is the government’s reported suspension of the revised Professional Allowance Table, which standardizes payments such as call duty and shift allowances.

Since 2023, resident doctors have spent a cumulative 51 days on strike, reflecting ongoing tensions over welfare, working conditions, and unfulfilled agreements.

Speaking on the development, NARD Secretary-General, Dr Shuaibu Ibrahim, hinted that the strike could be suspended if the government reverses its decision.

“When many people say we should start the strike immediately, we said no, this is a public holiday, let us give time for them to reverse the instruction, and once they give that reverse instruction, whether they communicate to us or they do not communicate to us, we will know.”

As of now, the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has not issued an official response regarding the strike.
