APC Crisis Deepens in Plateau as Dakur Joins ADC, Eyes 2027 Governorship

David Egbede, April 21, 2026April 21, 2026

The internal crisis within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Plateau State has intensified following the defection of party chieftain, Chief Jude Eli Dakur, to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where he has declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election.

Dakur, a former state commissioner, announced his ambition on Monday during a stakeholders’ meeting in his hometown of Kerang district, located in Mangu Local Government Area.

He explained that his decision to leave the APC was motivated by a desire to pursue a more inclusive, transparent, and people-focused vision of governance, adding that the party had strayed from the aspirations of its loyal members.

His exit comes just weeks after another APC stalwart and former governorship aspirant in the 2023 elections, John Sura, also resigned from the party shortly after defecting from the PDP.

While Sura did not publicly state his reasons, analysts have linked his move to recent political shifts involving Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang.

The wave of defections by key figures in recent months is widely viewed as a sign of deepening divisions within the APC in Plateau State, raising concerns about potential instability within the party ahead of future elections.
