APC Bauchi Caucus Forms Committee Amid Tensions Over Bala Mohammed’s Possible Defection

David Egbede, April 9, 2026

The Bauchi State caucus of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the National Assembly has resolved to set up a special committee to address concerns surrounding the possible defection of Governor Bala Mohammed to the party.

The decision was reached after a heated meeting in Abuja, where lawmakers expressed differing views over the political implications of the governor’s anticipated move.

Speaking after the meeting, acting secretary of the caucus, Dabo Ismail, said the committee would define the group’s conditions and expectations should the governor join the APC.

He added that the committee would engage relevant stakeholders and serve as the caucus’ representative in discussions relating to potential defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led administration.

According to him, “the committee will also keep members updated on the progress of discussions.”

Ismail noted that while the governor is welcome to the APC, the party’s national leadership must ensure that key stakeholders in the state are carried along in the process.

He described the initiative as a “democratic mechanism” aimed at managing differing opinions while preserving unity within the party.

However, some members raised concerns about how the situation has been handled so far.

The senator representing Bauchi North and chairman of the caucus, Sama’ila Dahuwa, faulted the APC national leadership for not consulting them before taking steps on the matter.

He described the lack of consultation as “unacceptable” and cautioned against imposing decisions on party members without proper engagement.

Dahuwa further disclosed that the committee comprises prominent party figures, including a serving minister, former governors, and two senators.

The caucus also agreed to formally present its position to the party’s national leadership, stressing the need for due process to be followed.
