The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has opened an investigation following claims that some of its officers allegedly extorted ₦100,000 from commercial bus operators along the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.
According to LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Mr. Taofiq Adebayo, the issue came to light via a Facebook post by an individual named Tosin, who claimed that on an unspecified Monday, officers stopped buses and demanded ₦100,000 before releasing the vehicles.
Adebayo said: “LASTMA views such an allegation with utmost seriousness, as it remains a disciplined, professional and ethically-guided government institution that does not, under any circumstances, condone misconduct, abuse of office or extortion by any of its personnel.”
He added that a thorough and impartial investigation has been launched, and any officer found guilty will face strict disciplinary action in accordance with the authority’s regulations.
“In furtherance of this investigation, the authority hereby extends an open invitation to the individual identified as Tosin to appear at the Office of the General Manager, LASTMA Headquarters, Oshodi.
He should present concrete evidence to substantiate his claims, as the burden of proof lies squarely upon he who makes an allegation.”
Adebayo reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and professionalism, stressing that the authority remains dedicated to fostering public trust and ensuring fair conduct by its officers.
The public has also been urged to report any perceived misconduct of LASTMA personnel through verified channels, with the assurance that the traffic management system will continue to operate on fairness, orderliness, and respect for all road users.
