2027: Labour Party Nigeria Zones Presidential Ticket to the South

David Egbede, March 24, 2026March 24, 2026

The Labour Party Nigeria has announced that its presidential ticket for the 2027 general election has been zoned to the southern region of the country, ruling out any aspirants from the North.

Speaking after a stakeholders’ meeting with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the party’s interim National Chairman, Nenadi Usman, stated that the decision is final and reflects the party’s internal consensus.

She emphasized that the party will not lobby or persuade individuals to run under its platform, noting that interested aspirants must willingly step forward.

According to her, while the party remains open to all qualified contenders, it will strictly adhere to its zoning arrangement, which excludes candidates from Northern Nigeria.

Usman added that the identity of the party’s eventual presidential candidate will emerge through a transparent and democratic primary process, stressing the party’s commitment to internal democracy.

The Labour Party previously fielded Peter Obi and Datti Baba-Ahmed in the 2023 election, although Obi has since defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
