Wolves Relegated After Eight-Year Premier League Stay Ends in Disappointing Campaign

Soliu Oyesiji, April 20, 2026

Wolverhampton Wanderers have been relegated from the Premier League, bringing an end to their eight-year stay in the top flight following a difficult season.

Their relegation was confirmed after West Ham United played out a draw with Crystal Palace, leaving Wolves mathematically unable to escape the drop.

Managed by Rob Edwards, the club has spent most of the campaign at the bottom of the table.

After 33 matches, they have accumulated just 17 points, sitting 16 points behind safety with only 15 points left to contest.

The Midlands club will now return to the Championship, a division they last won in 2018 under Nuno Espírito Santo, with hopes of securing a quick promotion back to the Premier League.

The relegation marks a sharp decline for a side that reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League in 2020.

Wolves’ struggles this season have been evident, with only three wins recorded and a league-low tally of 24 goals scored.

The campaign began under Vítor Pereira, who had guided the team to safety the previous season. However, he was dismissed in November after a poor start that yielded just two points.

Edwards was subsequently appointed on a three-and-a-half-year deal, largely with a long-term rebuilding plan in mind as relegation loomed.

Under his management, the team showed brief improvement, picking up 15 points and recording notable victories over Aston Villa and Liverpool, as well as a draw against Arsenal before the international break.

However, heavy defeats to West Ham and Leeds United after the break sealed their fate.

Wolves are currently three points behind Burnley, who also face the threat of relegation if results elsewhere go against them.
