A major bridge linking Wawa and Luma communities in Borgu Local Government Area, of Niger State, has been destroyed in an attack by suspected bandits, leaving residents stranded and halting economic activity in the region.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, completely cutting off the main route used by locals to travel between the two towns.

SP Wasiu Abiodun, the Public Relations Officer of the Niger State Police Command, confirmed the attack, explaining that suspected terrorists used explosive devices in the assault.

“On 23rd March 2026, at about 6:30 a.m., we received a report that at approximately 2:00 a.m., suspected terrorists operating in the park forest detonated explosives on a bridge along Luma Road in Borgu LGA, connecting Luma, Babanna, and Agwara communities,” he said.

According to SP Abiodun, the destruction appears to have been aimed at undermining ongoing security operations in the area. He added that security agencies have intensified patrols and clearance operations, while continuing to monitor the situation to safeguard residents.

The bombing has also disrupted the Babanna border market, a key trading hub that operates every Monday. Traders and shoppers were forced to suspend activities due to the damaged bridge.

In recent months, Niger State has experienced a rise in terror-related incidents, including attacks on local communities and markets. These developments have heightened anxiety among residents and posed additional challenges to local security forces working to maintain order.

Residents have called on both federal and state authorities to intervene swiftly and restore the route to normalcy.
