US Deploys MQ-9 Drones, 200 Troops to Nigeria For Intelligence Support – Report

David Egbede, March 21, 2026March 21, 2026

In a significant development in regional security cooperation, the United States military has deployed multiple MQ‑9 Reaper drones and about 200 service members to Nigeria in a move aimed at bolstering intelligence gathering and training support for Nigerian forces battling Islamist militant groups across the country’s volatile northern region.

According to officials from both nations, the deployment — confirmed by Reuters and several news outlets — is focused exclusively on surveillance, reconnaissance and advisory assistance, with no U.S. personnel embedded in frontline combat units and no drone strikes being conducted as part of the mission.

The MQ‑9 drones, known for their long‑endurance intelligence capabilities, are being used to monitor militant movements, gather actionable data and enhance situational awareness for Nigerian troops.

Meanwhile, the U.S. personnel are providing training and technical support designed to help Nigerian forces better track and respond to insurgent threats.

Officials said the deployment was made at the request of Nigerian authorities amid concerns over the growing presence of Boko Haram, Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and other extremist factions in parts of the northeast and northwest.

Both governments have stressed that the mission is non‑combatant in nature, underscoring that American troops will not participate in direct offensive operations or integrate with Nigerian units on the frontline.

Instead, the focus remains on strengthening intelligence cooperation and capacity‑building as part of ongoing bilateral security ties.

This deployment comes amid a broader pattern of international engagement in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism, which has included recent Nigerian military operations, allied support from regional partners and previous U.S. airstrikes against militants in late 2025.
