The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa, says terrorist groups often intensify attacks during the Ramadan fasting period due to extremist beliefs about martyrdom and spiritual reward.

General Musa made the comment on Thursday while speaking to journalists after a security briefing with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

He said the briefing was intended to update the President on the progress of military operations and to address public concerns about recent security developments.

Christopher Musa; National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Inspector General of Police, Mr Tunji Disu; Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Sunday Aneke; Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Idi Abbas, and Chief of Defence Intelligence, Maj. Gen. Emmanuel Undiandeye, during the Security Meeting with President at the Presidential Villa Abuja on Thursday

Responding to questions about the recent spate of attacks, despite ongoing security operations, the defence minister said some insurgents believe dying while carrying out attacks during Ramadan guarantees spiritual rewards, which can encourage them to escalate violent operations.

“It’s usual for terrorists during the Ramadan period to feel that if they die, they are going to heaven. So they are ready to commit any offence or get killed because they believe there is a reward,” he said.

However, Musa said the Nigerian military has adjusted its operational strategies and, contrary to some reports, recorded gains against insurgent groups in recent operations.

According to him, security forces have neutralized several commanders, retaken locations, and seized terrorist assets.

To strengthen ongoing security efforts, he added that President Tinubu has promised additional equipment and approved more resources.

The defence minister assured Nigerians that all security agencies are working together and that the government remains committed to defeating terrorist groups and restoring safety across the country.
