‘I Wasn’t Expecting It’ — IGP Disu Says His Appointment is Humbling and Touching

David Egbede, February 26, 2026February 26, 2026

Tunji Disu, the acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), described his appointment to the top position as both profoundly moving and deeply humbling, arriving at a moment he least anticipated.

Bola Tinubu appointed Disu as the 23rd IGP on Tuesday following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun due to “pressing family issues.”

At a briefing at the State House in Abuja on Wednesday, the President formally conferred the rank on Disu.

After assuming command at the force headquarters, Disu expressed heartfelt appreciation, saying the appointment is highly significant to him and thanking Tinubu for deeming him worthy of the role.

“The appointment means a lot to me because of my love for the profession and for the country. I was not expecting it, and I thank the president for finding me worthy,” he said.

He described the president’s public remarks about his career as both touching and encouraging, adding that the acknowledgement of his past assignments and achievements shows close attention to officers serving across the country and challenges him to deliver even more.

Disu vowed to place peace, stability, and national unity at the forefront of his agenda, emphasizing that the public are the “true employers” of the police.

He added that one of his initial addresses to officers would underscore the principle that effective policing anywhere depends on the cooperation of the community.
