“Kwara Closes College of Education, PDP Slams Government Over Insecurity”

Happiness Udisifan, January 22, 2026January 22, 2026

The Kwara State Government has ordered the immediate closure of the Kwara State College of Education, Oro, citing worsening security threats in the area. The decision, part of a broader directive affecting all schools in the local government area, aims to safeguard students, staff, and the wider community from potential harm.

An internal memo dated January 20, 2026, and issued by the Ministry of Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, confirmed the shutdown. Signed by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu, the memo instructed the institution’s management to halt all academic activities immediately, following Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s directive.

The closure has sparked criticism from opposition parties, with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) describing the move as “disruptive” and urging the state government to implement stronger security measures rather than suspending education. The party warned that prolonged shutdowns could derail students’ academic progress and affect the broader education system in Kwara.

State officials, however, defended the decision as a necessary response to the rising insecurity that has increasingly threatened lives around the institution. Authorities promised to review the situation continuously, assuring residents that schools would reopen once safety could be guaranteed.
